How We Score Cold (Hardware) Wallets

How We Score Cold (Hardware) Wallets

Setting the Be Crypto Safe Benchmark

Hardware wallets sit at the sharp end of self-custody. They’re designed to protect your keys even when everything else goes wrong, your computer, your phone, or the internet itself. But “secure” is only half the story. Some wallets trade transparency for polish. Others offer open code but fewer features. The Be Crypto Safe Benchmark exists to measure those trade-offs in plain English.

Our goal is simple: make hardware wallet safety measurable. The same way our Mobile and Desktop Wallet Benchmarks brought clarity to software wallets, this framework does the same for cold storage devices. We judge by proof, not popularity, and every score comes from verifiable data, not marketing claims or vendor submissions.

Our Review Approach

Every hardware wallet goes through a consistent evidence-based process. Devices are tested, documentation reviewed, and sentiment cross-checked across independent forums, TrustPilot history, and security research. We focus on what matters most to real users: how safely your keys are stored, how recoverable they are, and how the product behaves when things go wrong.

We also evaluate each wallet on its own terms. A high-end model like Ledger Stax shouldn’t be compared directly to a $150 budget device on looks alone, the weighting keeps context fair. We look for substance over gloss and test assumptions others skip.

For this reason, you’ll notice the price weighting is intentionally small compared with areas such as backup and recovery, security, privacy, and trust. These are the categories that actually determine whether your crypto survives a worst-case scenario.

The Be Crypto Safe Benchmark

Each wallet is scored out of 100 across eight categories. The weights reflect the practical risks of self-custody: if recovery fails, nothing else matters; if firmware can’t be verified, no amount of Bluetooth convenience will save you.

How Scores Are Calculated

Trust goes beyond branding. We measure how a company behaves under pressure, how open it is about mistakes, and how the wider community perceives it. That includes:

  • Public Audits: Responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities.
  • Historical Breaches or Leaks:  And the quality of post-incident communication.
  • Community Chatter: What experienced users, developers, and auditors are saying across Reddit, and independent crypto-security forums.
  • Size of the Install Base: The number of devices in circulation, firmware longevity, and update frequency. A larger, well-supported user base means more eyes on the code and faster discovery of bugs or regressions.
  • Customer Sentiment: Across review platforms such as TrustPilot, with both current and cached historical scores considered.

Trust, in short, is a living signal, not a press release. A wallet’s reputation isn’t built in a lab; it’s proven by how it’s supported once it’s in the wild.

Why It Matters

Hardware wallets are physical safes for digital assets, but a pretty box doesn’t make a trustworthy vault. The market mixes genuine innovation with over-hyped gimmicks. Some seedless or NFC wallets look futuristic yet hide critical trade-offs in recovery control. Others are rock-solid but intimidating for new users.

By breaking down each product into measurable layers across recovery, architecture, trust, and usability, we make it easier to match wallets to needs. A high-value long-term holder might score “Security Architecture” and “Recovery” as decisive; a mobile user might weigh “UX” and “Interoperability” higher. Either way, the structure keeps the comparison fair.

Independence & Transparency

Be Crypto Safe is not affiliated with any wallet manufacturer. Devices are either purchased at retail or loaned anonymously for testing. We don’t accept sponsorships, affiliate payments, or advertising from vendors. When we say “independent,” we mean it literally.

All reviews are authored by us, with the goal of explaining complex crypto-security in everyday terms no hype, no jargon, and no vendor spin. Every review closes with a clear summary, practical takeaways, and a reminder to test your backups before you stake your trust in any device.

The Final Buzz

Hardware wallets are the backbone of real self-custody. The right one depends on your comfort with open source, recovery discipline, and price.
